Dots are always-on AI agents inside ChatGPT. You give a dot a goal, connect the apps it needs, and decide what it may do on its own. It keeps working in the background between conversations, on its own cloud computer.

Q: How much do dots cost?

What are OpenAI dots?

OpenAI announced dots on September 29, 2026 at DevDay and describes them as "always-on agents built to handle everything." Unlike a normal ChatGPT chat, which stops when you stop typing, a dot takes on ongoing work and keeps making progress between conversations.

Each dot:

runs on GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI's most capable model;
gets its own cloud computer and browser, so it keeps working when your laptop is closed;
can connect to more than 4,000 apps through OpenAI's plugin ecosystem;
learns from your feedback and picks up your preferences over time;
can be named and personalized, with a round, bubbly avatar.

OpenAI's own examples: a developer assigns a dot to watch customer feedback and ship bug fixes, and a scientist has a dot rerun analyses and look into odd results whenever new experimental data comes in.

OpenAI's caveat: dots can still make mistakes, so review anything consequential before it goes out.

How much do dots cost?

OpenAI says that later you'll be able to add more dots and raise how fast each one works and how much it can take on per month. It hasn't published prices for that yet.

How to set up your first dot

Use a computer. Open the ChatGPT desktop app or ChatGPT in a desktop browser. You can't create a dot on mobile or mobile web.
Create and name your dot. Start with one primary dot and personalize it.
Give it a goal. Describe the ongoing work you want it to own, not just a single question.
Connect the apps it needs. Only connect what the goal actually requires.
Set what it may do alone. Use Custom Rules to allow an action, require your approval, or block it outright.
Keep an eye on it. Activity View shows what your dot is doing, including background work, so you can redirect it.

Once it's set up you can message your dot from the ChatGPT mobile app, too.

Controls and privacy

Built-in approval rules. Dots come with defaults for when to act alone and when to ask first. You can override them per action.
Access to your own computer is off by default. Turning it on is optional.
Training. OpenAI doesn't train on Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace content by default. On personal plans, you choose whether your dot's conversations and work can be used for training.
Disconnecting an app doesn't erase what your dot already learned from it. To remove that information, you have to delete the dot.

Dots for teams and enterprises

OpenAI plans specialist dots that each take on a defined role and can be given their own identities, credentials and tools. It's also working with Microsoft to bring specialist dots under the security and governance controls in Microsoft Agent 365. Longer term, OpenAI says it wants "teams of dots working together on your behalf."

Are dots the same as ChatGPT agent or Codex?

They build on the same kind of abilities, but a dot isn't tied to one chat, device or app. It owns a goal and keeps working on it in the background, and you can reach it from ChatGPT, Slack, Teams or a voice call.

Can I use dots in the UK or the EU?

Not on a Pro plan at launch. OpenAI's help center excludes the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the UK from the Pro rollout.

Can I set up a dot on my phone?
